Jake Van Hook is a member of the Hairy Buzzard Gizzards.
The Hairy Buzzard Gizzards sound like someone
locked the B-52s in the garage on a hot afternoon
with a case of Boones Farm wine and a sheet of
slightly out-of-date blotter acid. It\\\'s trippy,
funny, quirky, and urgent.
The band augments its shows with themed stage
sets built by the members, all artists who
obviously relish a spectacle and know how to
stage one.
Lively antics such as hula-hooping, instrument
smashing, piñatas, and 3-D glasses also
complement the Gizzards\\\' extremely danceable,
music, which plunders cheerily from a multitude of
genres.
The Hairy Buzzard Gizzards’ playful sound travels
from an orchestra of diverse instruments, from the
traditional percussion and guitar to oboe,
harmonica, flute, didgeridoo and fiddle.
Lyrically, these songs run the gamut from a takeoff
on a nursery rhyme (“Jack”) to sci-fi, to not getting
bogarted at a pot party, to real or imagined enemies
of HBG (“Ed Malone,” which contains the memorable
couplet “Ed Malone, leave us alone!”). In other
words, HBG sticks to stuff they know, and keeps it
light.
The band also publishes a comic book, “The
Gizzard Gazette.\\\" This graphic visual presentation
adds narrative to the live sets and features band
news and reviews of other artists in an effort to
stimulate the scene.
The Hairy Buzzard Gizzards are committed to
creating original music, which they describe as
\\\"southern psychedelic surf/skate punk.\\\" The band
has recorded a CD entitled \\\"Twistin\\\' Space and
Warpin\\\' Time.\\\" They are featured on the
Tallahassee Clearchannel radio station, X101.5’s
Locals Only III CD, and wrote songs for the
soundtrack to the upcoming “Plan 9 From Outer
Space - Next Gen” movie including the title track.
The group recently traveled to Miami, one of sixteen
bands chosen to compete in the Southeast Regional
Little Steven’s Underground Garage competition.

Brian Kruger of Ink Nineteen, Kadi Shardl of The
Tallahassee Democrat, and The St. Augustine
Record.)
“Meanwhile, a musical house party is going on that
will doubtless be busted by the cops any
second. Imagine Bob Stinson - era Replacements
plus some Fleshtones or even a twist of the
Feelies (in a particularly rambunctious mood),
playing in close proximity to a hundred sweaty
people and a bunch of kegs, and you begin to get
the picture. Highly recommended\\\".

\\\"...Musically, this is a little hard to categorize. A little
rock, a little punk...a lot of foot cymbals. The
Cramps might have sounded a little like this when
they first started out. Definitely one of Florida\\\'s
hardest working bands. The song Cereal rocks\\\" -

\\\"In addition to their cacophony of sounds, HBG are
surrounded by their cornucopia of recycled rubbish
art during live performances. Their stage art creates
pseudo-realities such as an underwater utopia,
Halloween horror and punk paradise. Audiences
who become addicted to the psycho-hypnotic HBG
artwork can get a monthly fix by ordering their \\\'zine
